When PanPhone is installed on a phone, the PanPhone user-interface will take over the original phone's user-interface. The new interface automatically comes up the moment you turn on the phone. The PanPhone user-interface shows a collection of apps. These apps will show information that is customised to each user.

We are working to have the following different types of information available on the phone:

Health Care

  • Health warnings and tips, e.g. to warn of floods in the area or to give nutritional advice
  • Health guides, such as Hesperian's "Where There Is No Doctor".

Education

  • Educational videos from Khan Academy on Math, Science, Economics and Humanities.

Income

  • New agricultural techniques, like conservation agriculture, to improve yields
  • Local 5-day weather forecast, to better prepare for planting and harvesting
  • The latest market prices of crops nearby you, so that you can negotiate a better price
  • The availability of daywork or microjobs in your local area
  • Surveys for monitoring and evaluation of local projects

Fun

  • Novels and local news
  • Pictures and videos
  • Podcasts and music
  • Games

The above list is only a starting point. If you have a good idea for other information or if you have good content yourself, then do let us know.

On top of these standard apps, it is be possible for us to develop and add custom-made apps for organisations. Examples could e.g. be an M&E app, or an app that allows health workers in remote clinics to report statistics back to the health department.
